The left coronary artery splits into two main branches: the left anterior descending and the circumflex. The circumflex is a branch that arises directly from the left coronary artery and travels in the left atrioventricular groove to supply the lateral and posterior surfaces of the left ventricle (often giving obtuse marginal branches along the way). In contrast, the right coronary artery supplies the right side of the heart, and the posterior descending artery arises from either the right coronary or the circumflex depending on heart dominance.
